Caption: Parkfield earthquake prediction experiment. Seismologist Professor Thomas McEvilly, photo- graphed with a geological map showing active faults in the San Francisco Bay area. McEvilly has discovered historical evidence of a 22-year cycle of magnitude 6 earthquakes at Parkfield in central California. This has led to predictions that an earthquake of about sixth magnitude will occur on the San Andreas fault at Parkfield before 1993. Dozens of researchers have made the town the most heavily instrumented earthquake region in the world. Professor McEvilly is a seismologist at the University of California at Berkeley, and at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory.
