Caption: Portrait of Benoit Mandelbrot (1924-2010), Polish- American mathematician. Mandelbrot's work has been intimately connected with fractal geometry, a branch of complex number theory. Mandelbrot's work built on that of Gaston Julia. The Mandelbrot set is constructed by peforming a repeated, simple mathematical transform on each point in the complex plane. Each point is evaluated to find its ultimate value under these repeated transforms. If the ultimate value is finite, the point is inside the Mandelbrot set. Mandelbrot started to construct images of the set in the 1960s using computers. Mandelbrot is seen here at the IBM research centre in 1990.
