This image is part of the feature Gran Sasso

Caption: The entrance of the Gran Sasso Laboratory, Italy, the largest underground laboratory in the world aimed at studying the properties of subatomic particles from astrophysical sources. The main experiments involve the detection of solar neutrinos, high-energy particles in the cosmic rays and magnetic monopoles. The laboratory is formed by three galleries which are situated under 1400m of rock. This provides a shield, equivalent to 3500m of water, which stops the low- energy particles in the cosmic rays. The rock has also a very low-level of natural radioactivity which provides a perfect environment for this research.
