Caption: Augustus de Morgan. Portrait of Augustus de Morgan (1806-1871), English mathematician. Although born in Madura, India, he was educated in England at several private schools. He read voraciously on mathematical subjects, notably algebra, and graduated from Cambridge University in 1827. He was appointed first professor of mathematics at University College in London in 1828, a post he held until 1866, with one gap between 1831 and 1836. He wrote several textbooks, and contributed hundreds of articles to the celebrated Penny Cyclopaedia between 1833 and 1844. He will be most remembered for his ideas that logic should preside over algebra and mathematics in general.
