Caption: Stephen Mojzsis. Portrait of the geochemist Stephen Mojzsis, seen in front of a representation of bacteria (orange). Stephen Mojzsis was part of the team that found possible traces of life in 3.86 billion year old rocks in Greenland. Previously the earliest signs of life were about 3.5 billion years old. Higher amounts of one type, or isotope, of carbon found in the rocks could be due to living organisms. Although their original structure has been destroyed, the organisms may have been bacteria-like. Stephen Mojzsis is at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, USA. Photographed in 1997.
