Caption: Charles Mansfield. Portrait of the British chemist Charles Mansfield (1819-1855), the founder of coal tar chemistry. Coal tar is the by-product that results from the anaerobic carbonization of coal. It consists of various aromatic (carbon-ringed) compounds and their derivatives. Mansfield suggested numerous uses for the compounds he isolated, including liquid fuel rocket propulsion and the dry cleaning of textiles. He died from burns sustained while working with coal tar benzene.
