Caption: Eadweard Muybridge. Historical photograph of the British-American photographer Eadweard James Muybridge (1830-1904) shaking an athlete's hand. Muybridge emigrated to California, USA, when he was 22 and became the official photographer to the U.S. government. He pioneered the use of photography to study human and animal locomotion employing novel new techniques such as high-speed photography. In the late 1870s he proved that a galloping horse has all its feet off the ground at certain times using 24 small cameras. This image, from 1879, is from an album of photographs taken in California, USA.
