Caption: Adolf Mayer (1843-1942), German agricultural chemist. In 1886 he showed that mosaic disease could be passed between tobacco plants. He thought, however, that the disease was due to a bacteria. It was not until 1936 that the actual culprit, the tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), was isolated.
