Caption: Mendel museum books. Books from the library of the Abbey of Saint Thomas, Brno, Czech Republic. The Abbey houses a collection of Mendel relics (the Mendelianum) commemorating Gregor Johann Mendel (1822-1884), former abbot of the Abbey, Austrian botanist and founder of genetics. Mendel's copy (left) of his Experiments In Pea Hybridisation (1866), describes his discovery of the statistical laws of heredity. The first German edition (right) of Charles Darwin's On The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859), describes how evolution works. Hereditary units (genes) would be recognised, sixteen years after Mendel's death, as the means through which evolution takes place.
