Caption: Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, biotechnologist. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw began her biotechnology career in Australia, carrying out postgraduate research into malting and brewing at Melbourne University. On returning to her native Bangalore she founded Biocon India in 1978 at the age of only 25. Biocon, of which she is Chairman and Managing Director, is the foremost biotechnology company in India. It produces biopharmaceutical drugs and industrial enzymes. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw was given the Padmashri award by the Indian Government in 1989 for pioneering efforts in biotechnology. Photographed in 2004.
