Caption: Philip Morrison, US physicist (1915-2005). Philip Morrison was born in New Jersey, USA. In 1940 he gained his PhD in theoretical physics under the supervision of J. Robert Oppenheimer. In 1942 Morrison joined the Manhattan Project, where he participated in the Trinity test, the first test of an atomic bomb. After seeing the destruction caused by the atomic bombs he became a leading voice against nuclear proliferation. In 1959 Morrison turned to astrophysics and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Morrison was also a successful writer and broadcaster.
