Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Jacques Mayol (1927-2001), French diver. Mayol (in wetsuit) held many world records in free diving (diving on a single breath without breathing equipment). He was the first diver to descend to 100 metres (1976). The 1988 film The Big Blue was partly inspired by the life story of Mayol, who was one of the screenwriters. Mayol committed suicide in 2001.
