Caption: Hudson Maxim (1853-1927), US chemist. Maxim invented several explosives, including smokeless powder (patented in 1890), a mixture of various nitro-based explosives in powder form. He was the younger brother of the more famous Hiram Stevens Maxim (1840-196), who invented the Maxim machine gun. Photographed on 14 July 1915. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
