Caption: John Maynard Smith (1920-2004), English biologist. Maynard Smith studied engineering at Cambridge and then completed a second degree in genetics at University College London. In 1976 Maynard Smith formally applied game theory to evolution and published Evolution and the Theory of Games in 1982. He also theorized and authored books on other problems, such as the evolution of sex and signalling theory.
