Caption: Alfred Gabriel Nathorst (1850-1921), Swedish explorer. In 1884, Nathorst was made a professor and appointed to work at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. He led several Arctic expeditions of scientific discovery, including one in 1899 that was also intended to find the missing Andree expedition. The Andree expedition was an attempt in 1897 to reach the North Pole by balloon. Nathorst's expedition failed to find the remains of the balloon expedition, which were not discovered until 1930. This photograph, which was taken in the period from the 1890s to the 1930s, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
