Caption: Facial reconstruction and X-ray, using skull fragments, of Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918), ruler of Russia. Tsar Nicholas, his wife Alexandra, and their five children (the Romanov family), were executed by the Bolsheviks after the Russian Revolution of 1917. The bodies were mutilated, dismembered, and secretly buried. Five of the bodies were exhumed in the early 1990s, and the Tsar and Tsarina were formally identified by various forensic techniques, including facial reconstructions. The bones were then ceremonially reburied in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in St Petersburg, Russia. The work seen here was carried out in 1992, in Ekaterinburg, Russia.
