Caption: Oppenheimer at atomic bomb test site, New Mexico, USA, in early May 1944. The test site was named Trinity. The first atomic explosion occurred near here on 16 July 1945. (Julius) Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967, far left), US physicist, was director from 1943 of the Manhattan Project to build this atom bomb. At centre, Major Peer DeSilva, Project Intelligence Officer, later made accusations that led to Oppenheimer losing his security rating in 1954. DeSilva later worked for the CIA. At right is Major W.
