Caption: Hermann Oberth (1894-1989), German space travel pioneer. Oberth presented the earliest mathematical analyses of the theoretical and practical aspects of human travel in space. As a student, he designed rockets and conducted experiments which proved that the body could withstand the physical stresses of space travel. His books The Rocket into Interplanetary Space (1923) and Ways to travel in Space (1929) established the basis for the technology of manned spaceflight. Many of his inventions and suggestions were used in the design of the first rockets launched by the USA and the USSR.
