Caption: Andrea Pavirani. Portrait of the molecular biologist Andrea Pavirani, the first person in Europe to successfully clone the gene causing cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disease that affects the exocrine glands, leading to excessive mucus production in the body. Lung infection is a common problem. Molecular biologists realised that CF was caused by a mutation in a single gene known as the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). Andrea Pavirani was the first European scientist to clone healthy copies of this gene into a virus, thus paving the way for gene therapy to treat CF sufferers. Photographed in 1996.
