Caption: Daniel Prieur. Portrait of professor Daniel Prieur, marine microbiologist, seen in front of a scanning electron micrograph of bacteria. Prieur is a professor at the Universite de Bretagne occidentale in Brest, France, where he researches the diversity, adaptations and genetics of pro- karyotes, such as bacteria and blue-green algae. In particular he studies extremophile prokaryotes which live at high temperatures and pressures at deep-sea hydrothermal vents. Finding the limits within which life can exist on Earth provides guidelines for searching for life or signs of life outside our planet. Photographed in 1997.
