Caption: Polo arriving at Hormuz. Coloured historical artwork of the Italian explorer Marco Polo (centre right, 1254-1324) arriving on the island of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf. This occurred sometime between 1292-1295 when the explorer was returning to Italy from China. The image shows Polo returning with exotic animals such as camels and an elephant. Marco Polo set off for China in 1271 with his father and uncle. When they arrived they were received by the Mongol Emperor Kublai Khan in 1275. Marco became a diplomat for Kublai Khan whilst his father and uncle acted as military advisors. Marco Polo wrote an influential account of his travels whilst in prison in 1298.
