This image is part of the feature Stem Cells

Credit: JAMES KING-HOLMES/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

Caption: Julia Polak, a stem cell researcher, at a microscope. Stem cells are the precursor cells from which all specialized human cells develop. It may be possible to implant these cells into the body to repair or replace diseased tissues or organs. Stem cells make up all the cells in young embryos, and mature stem cells are found in adults. They can be converted into specialized cells in the laboratory using chemical growth factors. Professor Polak is the director of the Tissue Engineering Centre of the Imperial College School of Medicine, London, England. The centre links expertise in cell biology, material sciences and reconstructive surgery.
