Caption: Alexander Mikhailovich Prokhorov (1916-2002), Russian physicist and Nobel laureate, wearing his Hero of Socialist Labor (stars, double award) and Order of Lenin (round) medals. Prokhorov was born to Russian immigrants in Australia. His family moved back to the USSR in 1923. He was educated at Leningrad University, and then worked in the oscillations laboratory of the Lebedev Physical Institute, Moscow, from 1939, leading it from 1954. The laboratory studied subjects such as radio waves, microwave spectroscopy, and lasers and masers. His share of the 1964 Nobel Prize for Physics was for work on masers and lasers. He was a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Photographed in 1986, in Russia.
