Caption: John Clifford Pemberton (1814-1881), US Civil War general. Pemberton served as a Lieutenant General in the Confederate Army during the US Civil War (1861-1865). He surrendered his forces to Major General Grant at the key Battle of Vicksburg (1863). This was an important victory for the Union forces, and helped the Union to eventually win the war.
