Caption: Nikolay Ivanovich Pirogov (1810-1881), Russian surgeon and teacher. Pirogov was a pioneering battlefield surgeon and one of the most famous doctors in Russia. In 1847, he was the first to use anaesthetics to treat wounded soldiers. He also worked as a surgeon in the Crimean War, the Franco-Prussian War and the Russo-Turkish War. He received the Demidov Prize, Russia's most prestigious scientific award, three times. Photographed in 1880, in Russia.
