Caption: Death of Pliny the Elder (23-79 AD), Roman naturalist and author, on the beach at Stabiae during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny described numerous animals, minerals and plants in his 37-volume encyclopedia Historia Naturalis. Based on two thousand books by nearly five hundred authors, the work covered zoology, botany, geography and astronomy. It was widely copied in the Middle Ages. Engraving from Vies des Savants Illustres (1877).
