Caption: Don Pollacco, British astronomer, at the controls of the William Herschel Telescope (WHT). This telescope, one of the largest optical telescopes in Europe, is part of the Isaac Newton Group. It is located at the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands. Pollacco, from Queen's University Belfast, led the team that designed and built the planet-hunting telescope SuperWASP (Wide-Angle Search for Planets). Once discovered by SuperWASP, the WHT is used to examine the candidate star systems in more detail. Photographed in 2006.
