Caption: English astronomer Ian Robson (b. 1948), professor of physics & astronomy at Lancashire Polytechnic. In 1988, Robson discovered a "blazar", an active galaxy that suddenly increased its energy output 17 times in a period of 8 months. The galaxy, known as 3C 279, is believed to have a black hole at its centre, & the increased energy output is thought to be the result of a star being sucked into the black hole. The photograph was taken in Robson's office at Lancashire Polytechnic in March 1988.
