Caption: Artwork representing the structure of the Gran Sasso Laboratory, Italy, the largest underground laboratory in the world. It is aimed at studying the properties of subatomic particles from astrophysical sources. The laboratory is formed by three parallel galleries (centre) which are situated under 1400m of rock. The main experiments involve the detection of solar neutrinos, high- energy particles in the cosmic rays and magnetic monopoles. The rock shields the detectors from the low-energy particles in the cosmic rays and, thanks to its low level of natural radioactivity, provides a perfect environment for this research.
