Caption: Francis Ronalds. Engraving of Sir Francis Ronalds (1788-1873), British inventor & telegraphy pion- eer. Ronalds was one of several people to design an electrostatic telegraph system from 1750. He demonstrated his system over a twelve kilometre wire in London in 1816. He was advised by the Admiralty that they "had no interest in telegraphs of any kind". Useful telegraph systems that used electric batteries were introduced in the 1830s.
