Caption: Sir William Mitchell Ramsay (1851-1939), Scottish archaeologist, writer and New Testament scholar. Ramsay was born in Glasgow, Scotland and educated at Aberdeen, Scotland and Gottingen, Germany. He spent several years from 1880 exploring and researching in Greece and Turkey, and he became an expert on the history and topography of Anatolia. He was also an authority on Christianity in the Holy Roman Empire. He published widely on historical geography and religious history. He was knighted in 1906. This image is from the Bain News Service, one of America's oldest news picture agencies, which holds images dating from the 1890s to the 1930s.
