Caption: Thomas Reiter (born 1958), German astronaut. Reiter is one of the top 50 astronauts in terms of total time in space. He spent 179 days in space on board the Russian Mir space station between 3rd September 1995 and 29th February 1996. During this mission he became the first German astronaut to perform a spacewalk. He was also launched on the Discovery STS-121 space shuttle mission on 4th July 2006 to join the International Space Station Expedition 13 crew for almost six months before returning on 22 December 2006. He was the first European astronaut to undertake long-duration missions like this.
