Caption: Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin (1869-1916, second left), Russian mystic, at a meeting with his female admirers. Rasputin, born in Siberia, was a wandering mystic and healer who rose to power in Imperial Russia by gaining the confidence of the royal family by acting as healer to their son. To further the advance of his power, Rasputin cohabited with upper-class women in exchange for granting political favours. However, he became involved in the political struggles between monarchist, anti-monarchist, revolutionary and other political forces, and, in 1916, he was assassinated in St Petersburg. Photographed in 1907, in Moscow, Russia.
