Caption: Portrait of Nevil Vincent Sidgwick (1873-1952), English chemist. Educated at Oxford University, Sidgwick remained there for most of his career. His main achievement came in studying the electron valence bonding theory of atoms. Sidgwick showed that the electron-sharing concept of bonding applied outside organic chemistry, and that the electron pair forming a bond might come from only one of the two atoms linked by a coordinate bond. This led to a greater understanding of coordination compounds. He also wrote on the organic chemistry of nitrogen.
