Caption: Dr Albert Sabin (b.1906), Polish-American microbiologist and discoverer of the oral polio vaccine. In 1921, Sabin emigrated from his native Poland to the USA with his parents. He was educated at New York University, and gained his MD in 1931. After Enders had successfully cultured the virus responsible for poliomyelitis, Sabin decided to work on a vaccine. Unlike the vaccine produced by Salk, Sabin's was a live attenuated vaccine. The vaccine was tested in Russia on 4.5 million people, and was shown to be completely safe. Sabin's vaccine was also much longer-lasting than Salk's and could be taken orally.
