Caption: Edward Somerset. Portrait of Edward Somerset, Second Marquis of Worcester (1601-67), Englishman and probable inventor of the steam water-pump. As a supporter of the King he went into exile in France in 1648 after the English Civil War. When he returned to England in 1652 he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. Released on bail in 1654, he wrote his book Century of Inventions, which was published in 1663. It contained brief descriptions of a hundred inventions including ciphers, signals and mechanical devices. One of these inventions was a steam water-pump which could raise a column of water around 12 metres. It may have been in operation in London, England, from 1663-70.
