Caption: Emilio Segre (1905-1989), Italian physicist. Segre studied physics at the University of Rome. From 1942-1946 he worked on the Manhattan Project in the USA, helping to produce the first atomic bomb. After World War II he was appointed as professor of physics at the University of California. His main research interests were in atomic and nuclear physics. In 1959 he shared the Nobel Prize for physics with Owen Chamberlain for his discovery of the antiproton, a sub-atomic particle with an equal and opposite charge to that of the proton.Restrictions:
