Caption: Julian Schwinger. Portrait of the US physicist Julian Seymour Schwinger (1918-1994). He is famous for unifying the theories of electromagnetism and quantum mechanics in a quantum electrodynamics (QED) theory. He developed QED by reformulating earlier theoretical work, by Dirac and others, to remove problems with predicting infinite values. His changes also allowed for Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity. He shared the 1965 Nobel Prize for Physics with Feynman and Tomonaga who independently developed QED. Photographed in 1954. ***** NO ADVERTISING USAGE IN CONSUMER OR TRADE MAGAZINES WITHOUT PRIOR WRITTEN APPROVAL *****
