Caption: Claude Shannon. Portrait of the US mathematician and information theorist Claude Elwood Shannon (1916-2001). Shannon's ground-breaking 1948 paper, A Mathematical Theory of Communication, laid out a general model for communications engineering that is considered to have laid the foundations for modern information theory. His terminology and his models have remained relevant through telephone, optical and wireless communication revolutions. He also worked on digital circuits and cryptography. Photographed at Bell Labs, USA, in 1954.
