Caption: Marquis de Sade (1740-1814), French writer, in the Charenton mental asylum. The marquis, whose name was Donatien Alphonse Francois de Sade, has the word "sadism" named after him. He wrote about sexual fantasy and perversion, which he practised, and for which he was imprisoned many times. His amorality formed part of the development of existentialism.
