Caption: Abdus Salam (1926-1996), Pakistani physicist. His family was from a poor farming district, but has a long tradition of piety and learning. Salam studied and worked in Pakistan and England. His main work was theory relating to the unification of the electromagnetic and weak nuclear forces. For this work he shared the 1979 Nobel Prize for Physics. Salem was a devout Muslim. He worked tirelessly to promote theoretical physics in the developing world. In 1968 he received the Eight Atoms for Peace award.
