Caption: Frederic Sauvage (1786-1857), French engineer, in his workshop. Sauvage is considered by some to be the inventor of the propeller. He registered a patent for a propeller in 1832. This had a single long blade that curved through 360 degrees (seen at lower left). Later propeller designs improved on this design by using several blades. This is an early 20th century French artwork.
