Sir Harold Spencer Jones (1890-1960), British astronomer. Spencer Jones was Astronomer Royal at the Royal Greenwich Observatory (1933-1955) and also President of the Royal Astronomical Society (1937-1939). In 1943 he was awarded the society's Gold Medal, as well as the Royal Medal of the Royal Society. He organised a project to determine the solar parallax from observations of the close approach of the asteroid Eros. He also served as Secretary, Treasurer and Foreign Secretary for the Royal Astronomical Society. From 1945 he was heavily involved in roles with international bodies, such as the International Astronomical Union. He was knighted in 1943, and created KBE in 1955.
