Caption: Ivan Mikhaylovich Sechenov (1829-1905), Russian physiologist. Sechenov, who worked in St Petersburg, is considered the father of Russian physiology. He showed that brain activity involved electrical currents in the brain, and made other fundamental discoveries in brain and nerve physiology, including a classic work on brain reflexes. He was elected an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1904. This artwork dates from 1900.
