Caption: Otto Yulievich Schmidt (1891-1956), Soviet explorer and geophysicist, next to an aeroplane. Schmidt is famous for his explorations of the Arctic. These included leading expeditions in 1929 and 1930 to establish the first scientific research station on Franz Josef Land. He worked on theories of the origin of the Earth and Solar System, and was editor of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia from 1924-1941. He was also a member of the Supreme Soviet, the government of the USSR. In 1937, he was made a Hero of the Soviet Union. Photographed in 1953, in Russia.
