Caption: Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1772-1844), French naturalist. Saint-Hilaire was professor of zoology at the Museum of Natural History in Paris between 1793 and 1840. He established the principle of "unity of composition", believing that all animals shared a body plan, with homologous parts varying in shape and size. Engraving from Les Savants Modernes (1899).
