Caption: Thomas Tompion. Portrait of Thomas Tompion (1639- 1713), pioneering English clockmaker. The son of a blacksmith, Tompion made large, wrought-iron clocks before establishing a reputation as a watchmaker. Tompion and his apprentices produced over 5000 watches and 600 clocks during his life. Though his own research did not yield any major advances, Tompion rapidly mastered the ways of incorporating other people's inventions into his designs. Tompion was the first person in England to use the spiral balance spring invented by Huygens. Tompion's partner, George Graham, continued the former's research after his death and made several important advances.
