Caption: Fridrikh Tsander (1887-1933), Russian rocket pioneer. Tsander designed the first Soviet liquid- propellant rocket, which first flew in 1933. He died the same year from typhoid fever. Along with the renowned scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, he propounded the idea of the use of huge solar sails to power spacecraft. He was also one of the first to consider the possibility of space stations in Earth orbit.
