Caption: Alexei Andreyevich Tupolev (1925-2001), Soviet aircraft designer, holding a model of a Soviet supersonic aircraft. Tupolev, the son of the famous aircraft pioneer Andrei Tupolev, worked on the world's first supersonic passenger jet, the Tupolev Tu-144. The first test flight of this plane was in 1968. Tupolev had become chief designer at his father's aircraft design bureau in 1963, becoming general designer in 1973. Later in his career, he worked on the Buran space shuttle. Photographed in Russia, in 1969.
