Caption: Aleksei Treshnikov (right, 1914-1991), Soviet Arctic explorer, with a companion in the Arctic. In his youth, Treshnikov participated in a Soviet expedition to the North Pole (1948), led the third Soviet ice-drift station in the Arctic (1954-1955), and led the 2nd Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1956) and the 13th Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1967-1969). From 1960 to 1981, he was director of the Soviet Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, St Petersburg, Russia. Photographed in 1977.
